The Gabriela Transitions Experiences Survey (GATES) is a nation-wide research study conducted by Ryerson University and York University, and led by GABRIELA Ontario as its main community organization partner.
Over the past two decades, increasing numbers of foreign workers have entered Canada through the Live-In Caregiver Program (LCP) to meet the childcare needs of working parents and the elder-care needs of an aging population. One of the main draws of the LCP for applicants is the opportunity to apply for permanent resident status upon completion of the program requirements.
However, attaining permanent resident status is not the end of the journey for LCP immigrants. In fact, this is often the beginning of an additional struggle to reunite with family members, find meaningful employment and adjust to Canadian society. In the proposed study, we examine the labour market trajectories of former LCP workers in order to understand the employment barriers that this group faces after attaining permanent resident status in Canada
The purpose of this study is to gather information about the experiences of the Filipino women who are transitioning to life as a Canadian permanent resident from the Live-In Caregiver Program. The study will be used to improve services for the community, raise awareness, and advocate for the welfare of the women and their families.
This is being conducted to the following cities:
